How To Brush Your Children’s Teeth

The key is, to brush and floss together, make it part of their morning and evening routine in their early years.

It can be a struggle at first, so one way to make your child interested in oral care is to brush together, kids will mimic what their parents do!

Show your son or daughter your excellent brushing technique, including your great tongue brushing skills. You need to make this fun, so be silly!!…..make up a rhyme or song about keeping teeth clean?!

Special Brush – Another way to keep your child’s interest alive is with a new, fun toothbrush. When it is time to replace the old toothbrush with a new one, opt for a colourful, soft-bristled brush, or one with your child’s, current, favorite cartoon character, on such as the SpongeBob, Dora the Explorer or Elsa from Frozen!

Keep Track of Time – Use a two minute sand timer. Let your child flip over their brightly coloured timer and then start brushing.

Special Toothpaste – How about trying Kids Fruit Flavored (strawberry or watermelon) Anti-Cavity Fluoride Toothpaste, your child will love them, they taste so good! My 7 year old daughter, for example, loves the flavoured toothpaste that changes colour after brushing for more than a minute.

Books and Videos – Check out a children’s book from the library that encourages healthy oral care habits. You can also show your child a fun video about dental hygiene for kids. Stories and videos that are designed for children are great for teaching kids how to take care of their teeth and for making oral health something that they can relate to.

Gold Stars – To make brushing their teeth an enjoyable task, create your own gold star reward system. Every child likes to be rewarded and feel like they have made their parents proud, so maybe look into calendar posters and stickers to make this fun and rewarding, with extra kudos for brushing without a reminder?

Dentist Visit Surprise – Regular check-ups are another important part of good dental hygiene for kids. Visits to the dentist every six months help to keep your child’s smile sparkling and healthy. Surprise your child after the appointment with some fun family time. Head to the park or plan a picnic with healthy foods and treats?

On a personal note, Child Oral Health is a subject very close to my heart and is a subject and treatment that I am looking to learn a lot more about, so please come back soon and keep in touch, to follow me on this journey and help our children have a healthier future!
