Caring For Your Implants

I have to admit, its rather difficult to motivate patients to start using interproximal oral hygiene aids around their single tooth implant, implant bridge or cantilever bridge.

What most of you are not aware of is, plaque and bacteria that form around the natural teeth can also form around implants too and can cause gum inflammation and lead to peri-implant diseases, such as, peri-implant mucositis (similar to gingivitis) and peri-implantitis (similar to periodontitis), which can lead to bone destruction causing implant to fail.

Looking after implants is actually very easy, but involves a slightly different flossing technique as well as little more of your time.

Implant Bridges

For implant bridges I recommend patients use SUPERFLOSS  or/aswell as WATERPICK.

Let’s begin with Superfloss. All you need to do is start with the stiff end, thread it through one side of your dental implant, wrap it around the implant with the spongy part and thread it through the other side, crisscross and do shoeshine motions for 10 seconds. Then slide the wide and spongy section of the superfloss underneath your bridge and move back and forth to loosen plaque and food debris, then wrap it around the other implant and thread it through the other side, again crisscross and do shoeshine motions for 10 seconds.

SuperFloss by Oral B
Oral B Waterpik

For Waterpick/Waterflosser technique simply follow manufactures instructions as there are plenty of different models on the market. It’s a very easy machine to use. It cleans underneath implant bridges using water pressure and pulsations, which washes away harmful plaque and food debris. Waterpiks can also be used with mouthwash, which neutralizes odors, minimises bacteria levels and helps to freshen your breath.

Single Tooth Implants and Cantilever Bridges

For single tooth implants and cantilever bridges you can either use a SUPERFLOSS or a regular FLOSS, whichever you are more comfortable using.

The technique for both products is pretty much the same. If you decided to use superfloss, take the stiff end, thread it through one side of your dental implant, wrap it around it and with the spongy part, thread it through the other side, crisscross and do shoeshine motions for 10 seconds. If you use regular floss all you need to do is gently wrap the floss around the implant then crisscross and do shoeshine motions for 10 seconds.
