The Crucial Link Between Dementia and Oral Care.

The impact of dementia on individuals and their families is profound, affecting every aspect of daily life, including oral health.

The Alzheimer’s Society’s prediction that the number of people with dementia in the UK will surpass one million by 2025 and reach over two million by 2051 highlights an urgent need for comprehensive care strategies. Among these, the significance of oral health care in dementia often goes unnoticed, yet it plays a pivotal role in maintaining the overall health and well-being of those affected.

Understanding The Challenge:

Dementia not only affects the individual diagnosed but also casts a wide net, impacting family members, friends, and the dedicated carers who support them. As someone who has witnessed the effects of dementia within my own family, I can attest to the emotional and physical challenges it presents. It’s a condition that turns lives upside down, demanding attention and care that can overshadow other aspects of health, notably oral hygiene.

In my years of experience as a dental hygienist, I’ve observed firsthand how patients with full mental capacity can grasp the importance of oral hygiene, adhere to advice, and maintain their oral health. This understanding and cooperation facilitate effective dental care, promoting long-term oral health. However, the scenario shifts dramatically when dementia enters the picture.

The Decline in Oral Health:

For individuals living with dementia, maintaining oral hygiene becomes a formidable challenge. Cognitive decline interferes with the ability to perform basic oral care routines, such as brushing and flossing, leading to an escalation in oral health issues. Gum disease, tooth decay, and oral infections become more prevalent, exacerbated by difficulties in accessing dental care, behavioural changes, dietary shifts, and the side effects of medications common in dementia patients.

Regrettably, oral health care for those with dementia is often relegated to the background, overshadowed by more immediate care needs. Yet, neglecting oral hygiene can have far-reaching consequences, affecting not just oral health but overall well-being.

Bridging the Gap:

The key to addressing this issue lies in education and support. Carers play a critical role in assisting individuals with dementia in maintaining their oral health. This includes encouraging regular brushing and flossing, utilising adaptive devices to simplify oral care routines, selecting appropriate oral care products, and ensuring consistent dental check-ups.

Adaptive strategies and products can make a significant difference, enabling easier and more effective oral care for dementia patients. Moreover, regular dental appointments should be prioritised to manage and prevent the progression of oral health issues.

Conclusion:

As we face an increasing number of individuals living with dementia, it’s imperative that we recognise the integral role of oral health in their care. By fostering awareness and providing the necessary support and resources, we can ensure that oral care does not become an overlooked aspect of dementia care.
